Tim'm T. West
From Tim'm's Website:
"Black, queer, feminist, poz, and working class, Tim'm T. West has embraced all of who he is and, with laser-beam precision, harnessed the power of his truth to illuminate, celebrate, inspire, provoke, and bear witness. As a teacher, performance artist, author, and culture producer, Tim'm has become an exemplar among contemporary Renaissance personalities of the early 21st Century as he brings others to voice through education for critical consciousness. Indeed, that Tim'm has been interviewed by such dizzying array of media outlets from Newsweek to the New York Times is a testament to his importance to the spirit and history of the times as a foundational maverick among black, multi-disciplinary artists. Even a restricted Google' search of just his name yields over 700 Internet occurrences."

Tim'm grew up in Arkansas and attended Duke University (we'll forgive him for that.. :) )

Peterson Toscano

Peterson Toscano will be performing his one-man show, "Transfigurations - Transgressing Gender in the Bible."

"In this one-person play, theatrical performance activist, Peterson Toscano, unearthstransgender Bible characters--those people who do not fit in the gender binary, and who in transgressing and transcending gender, find themselves at the center of some the Bible's most important stories.

Drawing on inspiration from one-on-one interviews with transgender and genderqueer individuals, Peterson weaves their experiences with the stories and lives of transgender, genderqueer and gender-variant people right on the pages of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.Hilarious and moving, Toscano deepens well-known (and lesser-known) Bible stories as he presents an array of characters with an array of genders."

Scott Turner Schofield

From Scott's Website:
"Scott Turner Schofield is a man who was a woman, a lesbian turned straight guy (who is mostly read as a gay man) creating theater about gender and sexuality in the Deep South. Not surprisingly, his work centers on contradictions and comedy.  These poetic and often hilarious autobiographical monologues challenge fundamental gender assumptions with stories of searching, embarrassment, pride, and the joy of finding yourself on your own terms. His work has been lauded by press, academics, and artists alike for meeting queer and mainstream audiences alike with humor and compassion."

Why performers?

This year the Unity Conference Steering Committee has chosen to feature four performance artists, rather than the usual mix of performers, speakers, and other sorts of activists. We have decided to do this because we believe in the power of art to create change and because we believe that our movement(s) should be doing more to support the cultural workers who do this under-recognized work.

So often we ask artists - DJs, designers, poets, writers, and others - to donate their talents to our projects. We send the money we raise to non-profits who lobby or provide direct services - and no doubt those groups need support. But it is time for us to recognize that art is the work too. We at the Unity Conference are dedicated to paying for art (in an ideal world we would create alternative economies beyond money to support them, but for now...). That means the designers, photographers, and performers you see featured on this site and throughout the conference are being compensated to the absolute best of our ability.

So thank you for helping us support these incredible activists who are such an essential part of our movement! (Click donate to help make sure we make this happen.)
